The cuts sparked rumors that 343 Industries would be weaned from Halo, but studio head Pierre Hintze and Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty denied this. Questions, however, remained. The one 343 Industries now uses, Slipspace, is based on old code and makes it difficult, according to Schreier’s sources, to develop new, near-ready modes for Halo Infinite. At the end of 2022, 343 Industries decided to switch to Unreal Engine. It will form the basis of the battle royale (may evolve into something else) codenamed Tatanka (created with Certain Affinity) and possibly future Halo. Contrary to the hopes of fans, new story content for Halo Infinite was not being prepared: the staff (many of them out of work in January) were more interested in prototypes at Unreal and ideas for potential Halo games. In a letter to staff after the cuts, Hinze outlined the studio’s current goals: to develop Infinite and the Forge editor, prepare tools for future Halo, and increase the series’ audience size and target platforms.
